In the late Eighties when the CAD programs became readily available, there began massive redundancies in drafting departments of small and mid-size firms. A CAD operator could replace three-five drafters still deploying traditional methods. Besides, a great many engineers began to do their own drawing projects, thus the demand for traditional drawing departments disappeared. Consequently, a lot of drafters lost their jobs. Being high-priced, the advances were primarily purchased by large businesses. Thus, small companies were unable to contend against giant companies that widely deployed CAD. At present, prices are reasonable. Even high-end packages need less expensive platforms and some even support multiple platforms. Additionally, there have been introduced diverse packages to convert CAD files to other formats.
